The Business Network for Offshore Wind

The Challenge

The United States offshore wind industry was at a precipice: In order to successfully bring offshore wind (and all of its health, economic and environmental benefits) to the U.S. at reasonable cost, it needed to solidify a central hub to launch the industry. The State of Maryland was perfectly poised to be that hub and bring thousands jobs to the state — if the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) voted to approve and fund a large-scale offshore wind project by May 17, 2017 through the Offshore Renewable Energy Credit (OREC). As the only nonprofit solely focused on the development of the U.S. offshore wind industry, the Business Network for Offshore Wind (“The Network”) knew that it was critical to influence a positive OREC decision in order to successfully move the industry forward and create great benefit for Maryland and its residents.

The Solution

Vitamin developed an aggressive media relations plan to generate awareness around the benefits of offshore wind, generate awareness of the two large-scale offshore wind projects that the PSC was evaluating and ultimately, influence a positive OREC decision.

Vitamin started by helping The Network develop and publicize a “Meet the Developers” event, where the two developers competing for the OREC funding were able to present their plans to business executives, unions, offshore wind leaders and the media. Vitamin also helped publicize the Network’s annual three-day International Offshore Wind Partnering Forum (IPF) through pre-event pitching to major publications and event calendars and by inviting members of the press to physically attend the IPF. Vitamin created and maintained an onsite pressroom for attending journalists to interview key speakers, sponsors and executives about the offshore wind industry coming to Maryland.

Vitamin kept the Network and OREC decision top-of-mind throughout the PSC’s decision-making process through ongoing thought leadership positioning of Liz Burdock, the Network’s executive director. Vitamin helped write and pitch op-ed submissions and facilitated print, online and broadcast interviews.

The Results

  • Vitamin earned more than 10 press hits specifically around the OREC decision in relevant local and trade publications.
  • Top-tier trade and local media outlets attended the IPF and published nearly 10 subsequent articles about the conference.
  • On May 11, 2017, the PSC awarded OREC funding to both large-scale offshore wind projects.
