John Waters’ Christmas Spirit
As we are just exiting the 2015 holiday season, we wanted to take a quick look back at the things that make the Baltimore season standout. Quite frankly, nothing shouts “Baltimore Christmas spirit” like a John Waters advent calendar.
Some background on this piece…
Last year the team at Vitamin received a copy of this advent calendar from someone on the inside. Designed as John Waters’ personal Christmas card, the piece doubles as an advent calendar. The effort put into this is phenomenal. The finished design consists of a detailed illustration by renowned illustrator Kagan McLeod, who has worked with countless big-time clients; Nike, GQ, Time, and Wired just to name a few. The concept is a portrait of a family setting on Christmas morning with three children and a dog running down the stairs, anxious to open presents. Hand-painted glitter glistens throughout the piece adding that special Christmas cheer. The presents and pictures on the wall open to reveal an array of some of Waters’ favorite and (macabre) cultural icons. One of the details reveals an old New York Post newspaper with “POPE SHOT” as a big bold headline.
It’s a real treat to get our hands on a copy of something like this, and fantastic to know that though John Waters may be the “Pope of Trash”, he has great taste when it comes to print media.
