Alaz Approves Then vs. Now: Celebrity Transformations
We’re in the business of constant reinvention. And we put our paws together for celebrities who can keep themselves relevant without abandoning their core. But some celebrities have changed their brands so drastically throughout their careers that they almost feel like completely different people.
Fetch this: my list of the most jaw-dropping, ear-scratching celebrity transformations – some for the better, some for the worst.
Miley Cyrus – From Child Starlet to Startling Child
Daughter to Billy Rae Cyrus and star of the former hit show, Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus was the pinnacle of young and adorable.
Things certainly changed once the singer traded in her long brown locks for a short pixie ‘do. And while her new grooming is actually flattering, her new personality is not. From her suggestive performance at the VMAs to her signature tongue-out-of-the-mouth look, Miley Cyrus is no longer the beloved Disney star she once was. Parents recently voted her one of the worst celebrity role models – and her main audience is children and teens! Talk about a reinvention gone wrong. (I mean, geez Miley, even I know when it’s appropriate to hang my tongue out of my mouth.)
Mo’Nique – From Inspiration to Thinspiration
Comedian and actress, Mo’Nique, has always touted her size with honor. She’s written books called “Skinny Women Are Evil: Notes of a Big Girl in a Small-Minded World” and “Skinny Cooks Can’t Be Trusted” and has inspired women to be proud of their image.
Recently, Mo’Nique decided she wanted to live a healthier lifestyle. And after lots of diet and exercise, she is now proud of her 82-pound-thinner body. And while she’s certainly not skinny, not everybody is happy about her new weight. After building a career all about empowering larger women to be comfortable in their own skin, her significant weight loss has made people question her genuineness and overall brand. I for one am all about a healthy lifestyle. I go for runs and play ball with my owners everyday. Maybe that’s jealousy I smell?
Kelly Osbourne – From Hot Mess to Hotness
Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne, was best known for her careless behavior and wild look. From her painkiller addiction to her assault arrest to her frequent (often times, scathing) word vomit – Kelly was no stranger to negative media attention.
While Kelly Osbourne has stayed true to her opinionated personality, she has toned down the reckless behavior and cleaned up her image. She still has some work to do on her scathing tongue, but her new look and decreased drama have most of us wagging our tails.
Justin Timberlake – From Boy Band Cliche; to Singing Sensation
Justin Timberlake came onto the scene as the star of teen pop boy band, *NSYNC. His youthful look and sweet sound appealed to screaming young girls all over the world.
These days, Justin is seen as a sophisticated songwriter and performer. Aside from his Superbowl halftime show with Janet Jackson, Justin has mostly stayed out of trouble and he’s certainly avoided common child star scandals. Put your paws together for Justin Timberlake, everybody.
Amanda Bynes – From Comedy to Crisis
Remember Amanda? She was the hilarious young star of hit shows like All That, The Amanda Show and What I Like About You and movies like She’s the Man, Hairspray and Easy A. Her knack for delivery and thigh-slapping facial expressions made her one of Hollywood’s favorite young stars.
But now, it appears Amanda Bynes does not know who she is. She quit acting, adopted a new look inspired by ex-stripper, Blac Chyna, has been arrested multiple times, started Twitter beefs with everyone from model Crissy Tiegen to blogger Perez Hilton and constantly rants and raves about her life in the limelight. Whether she’s suffering from schizophrenia, drug abuse or both – the girl is barking mad. To get the full scoop of her downfall, click here.
Jonah Hill – From Comedian to Question Mark
Comedic chubster, Jonah Hill, was at the height of his career sending audiences into fits of giggles with his performances in movies such as Superbad, Knocked Up, Evan Almighty and Get Him to the Greek. His size and comedic delivery solidified his place amongst the “fat and funny” greats such as Chris Farley, Jack Black and Cedric the Entertainer.
After Jonah’s dramatic 40-pound weight loss, people started questioning his humor – could a skinny Jonah Hill still be funny? And Jonah’s not the only chubby-gone-skinny actor experiencing the same backlash. The jury’s still out on how their new sizes will affect their comedic careers, but I’ll certainly be sniffing out the situation.
Rihanna – From Bajan Baby to Fashionista
When Rihanna (signed by music mogul, Jay-Z) came out with her first single Pon de Replay, she was seen as an innocent, Caribbean pop princess finding her place in the American music industry.
Once people started noticing Rihanna’s avant-garde style and sassy personality, she tossed away her bubblegum look and has been transforming herself ever since – sporting what has to be hundreds of different hairstyles. But I don’t mind her ever-changing image because it complements her fashion-forward persona – and you can’t be a fashionista if you always look the same. Besides, it doesn’t matter what hairstyle Rihanna is rocking, she always looks bad to the bone.
Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi – From Wild to With Child
On what felt like the never-ending MTV phenomenon, The Jersey Shore, Snooki was arguably one of the most ridiculous characters on reality television. Her career skyrocketed because she was defined by her trashy style and her raunchy sayings.
Since becoming a mother to her son, Lorenzo, Snooki has calmed down significantly. She lost a healthy amount of weight and adopted a much more conservative, classy style. She’s traded in her promiscuous lifestyle and has been enjoying life as a mother. Two paws up for Snooki!
Chris Brown – From Young and Dreamy to Gross and Scary
Chris Brown started his career as a young R&B superstar. He was beloved for his age-appropriate songs and killer dance moves.
After a domestic disgrace with then-girlfriend, Rihanna, Chris Brown has continued to destroy his tarnished brand. From his violent outburst on Good Morning America in 2011 to his constant rants on Twitter, the guy just can’t seem to stay out of the doghouse and keep his paws clean.
Nicole Richie – From Sloppy to Sultry
Anyone remember that reality show The Simple Life where socialites Nicole Richie and then-best friend Paris Hilton “roughed it” across America? Throughout the show, the audience got their laughs out of Nicole’s lewd comments, inappropriate behavior and unflattering outfits.
Nicole Richie has since gotten married, had children, cleaned up her look and become arguably one of the biggest style icons in Hollywood. I’d play fetch with her any day.
